B-Film is the solo project of Paul Luttrell: a 22 year old musician from Hobart, Australia. Tatemae is the second album Paul has released as B-film, and for this installment he shuns synthesizers and other electronic sounds for a more organic, grittier soundscape. As a whole, The foundation of Tatemae rests in Shoegaze - whispy vocals, distorted wailing guitars - but at times drifts into Post-Rock and heavily percussive Indie Rock. The concept that encompasses the double LP is given away by the title (Tatemae being a Japanese word that loosely translates to 'social facade'); a social facade that relates to Capitalism, Commercialism and just plain old Pretention. Tatemae is frustration due to the overwhelming sense of powerlessness that one experiences from day to day, and the ways in which one is perpetually manipulated into a compromise.
